Small town beginnings


Joel grew up in the small town of Deer Lodge, Montana (Pop. 3,100).  His father is a local pastor and former schoolteacher and his mother is an artist, harpist and part-time care worker at the local nursing home. Joel has a younger brother, Daniel, who is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and doing his residency in emergency room medicine in Sayre, Pennsylvania.




Joel attended Liberty University, in Lynchburg, Virginia, a private Christian university, graduating in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Government: Pre-Law.  Joel is a 2014 graduate of the University of Montana School of Law.



Joel attends his brother Daniel's 2019 medical school graduation at Auburn, Alabama with his parents Martin and Lual and other family friends.

Joel accepted a job at the Netzer Law Office in May of 2014 and is a shareholder in the firm. Joel is licensed to practice law in both Montana and North Dakota.


An active member in the Sidney community


Joel is active in the Sidney community, attending a local house of worship, is a member of the Sidney Kiwanis club, and is the former chairman of the Richland County Republican Central Committee which he has been active in since 2014.  He is the co-founder and vice president of the Sidney Young Professionals and also serves as president of the Northeast Montana Bar Association.  Joel is a member of the NRA and the Montana Farm Bureau Federation.  Joel is in his first-term as Representative of Montana House District 35, serving on the House Business & Labor Committee, Transportation Committee and Fish, Wildlife and Parks Committee.


When not working, Joel enjoys being in the Montana outdoors with "Chester" his Golden Retriever dog, attending events at the Mon Dak Heritage Center, live music, trivia, good food, visiting with people, pheasant hunting and traveling.
